High avalanche danger in the west on Wednesday, April 15

The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) has issued a Level 4 warning—significant avalanche danger—for the Svalbard West region on Wednesday, April 15. According to Skred AS, there is no increased avalanche danger in Longyearbyen itself.

Varsom.no reports that dry and wet slab avalanches will break loose spontaneously due to heavy local precipitation, wind, and mild weather in the western Svalbard region. The mild-weather boundary is at approximately 400 meters above sea level. Avoid avalanche-prone terrain.

Today’s avalanche warning from Skred AS for Longyearbyen has a low probability of occurrence (green level).
