Due to excessive manganese levels in the drinking water, each child under one year of age receives ten liters of water per week.

Test results from water samples taken in Longyearbyen show high concentrations of manganese. The Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI) has concluded that the manganese content is too high for the water to be given to infants, that is, children between 0 and 12 months of age.

This means that tap water should not be given to infants or mixed with infant formula given to infants.

The Longyearbyen Local Council (LL) offers free bottled water to parents of infants. Each child receives ten liters per week, which can be picked up at the Svalbard Store.

LL sends out a text message once a month, which must be presented at the Svalbard Store.

Population Register

It can be challenging to obtain the phone numbers of parents of infants, both because some have not yet visited the health clinic and because others have not registered their child in the Population Register on Svalbard.

For this reason, there may be parents of infants who are not in our registry, and in such cases, we ask them to contact us.
