Water Quality Status in Longyearbyen

The tap water in Longyearbyen has had water quality issues over time. The latest water samples show improvement in several areas, but because the results still vary, we are maintaining our recommendation not to drink tap water until further notice.

Drinking water in Longyearbyen is now supplied from our summer water source in Steintippdalen. Water levels fluctuate somewhat, and we know from experience that they may rise as autumn progresses. Water samples are routinely taken to monitor water quality.

The Longyearbyen Local Council is maintaining the recommendation we have had in place since September 2025 not to drink tap water. This applies in particular to people with stomach problems, young children, and the elderly.

Free drinking water is available at the Svalbard Store in your own containers.

This water is supplied from the water treatment plant at the Svalbard Brewery. The water is produced using reverse osmosis and meets all drinking water standards, including those for odor and taste.

Recommendation for residents

- Avoid drinking tap water if you are sensitive to sulfate or nickel

- Tap water can be used for showering, washing, and other purposes
