Youth Council
About the youth council
A youth council is a group of young people who represent young people where they live, i.e. in their municipality or county. The purpose of the youth council is to give young people a voice in municipal politics, and it is therefore a forum for upholding Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which states that children have the right to be heard in matters that concern them, and that children's opinions should be given due weight.
The Longyearbyen Youth Council is a politically independent council consisting of a group of young people in Longyearbyen from middle school and high school. Their job is to safeguard the interests of children and young people, and the members of the Youth Council have a special task in representing the opinions of children and young people to politicians.
In addition to working on political and other issues, the Longyearbyen Youth Council processes applications and allocates funds to teams and associations, projects, or individuals. Each year, the Longyearbyen local government makes funds available for the Youth Council to allocate. This means that the Youth Council decides how much money to give and to whom.
The Youth Council consists of the following:
Chair: Embla Therese Abild
Vice-Chair: Iben Nikoline Abild
Ingrid Fuglem
Eivind Oldernes Hoem
Ida Marie Grosvold Maudal
Mikkel Bjørnar Krapp Jensen
Rasmus Birkeland
