Young in Longyearbyen

The Longyearbyen local council has many activities on offer for young people. These include a youth club, LAN parties, and a wide range of cultural activities. Young people in Longyearbyen work to promote youth participation, and they themselves take on a great deal of responsibility for the various events.

Youth Club

Ungdomsklubben

The youth club has moved into new premises on the second floor of the Coop building. Opening hours are better than before, with the club now open every day of the week in state-of-the-art club premises. Longyearbyen Youth Club, better known as Klubben, is the informal meeting place for young people from 5th grade to 20 years of age. The premises are divided into two zones so that the older ones have their own room. And the best thing? The young people themselves have been involved in designing and furnishing the premises – so everything here is made for and by young people.

The club board for 2025/2026 consists of the following:

Chair Samantha Gabriella Aspen (9th grade)
Deputy Chair Astrid Hammervoll Helgesen (9th grade)
Activities Manager Ysabelle P. Dela Cruz (9th grade)
Music and Games Manager Princess Joy Regato (9th grade)
Senior Club Activities Manager Tiril S. Jordbrudal (9th grade)
Junior Club Contact Person Eleseus Mørk (7th grade)

LybLan

LybLan – Longyearbyen's own LAN party

LybLan is a social gathering place for young people in Longyearbyen who are interested in gaming. Here, young people from 7th grade to 20 years of age can meet for a weekend of gaming, competitions, and socializing.

The event is held during the dark season (
usually at the end of January). The club board is behind LybLan and is responsible for the entire event: planning, rigging, food service, and of course gaming tournaments and other social activities that last throughout the evening and night. LybLan starts on Friday evening and ends on Saturday morning. Registration and prices are announced in advance of each event.

Age limits and gaming policy
All activities, competitions, and tournaments during LybLan follow the applicable age limits for games. This means that we never organize anything with an age limit higher than 12 years.

We encourage parents and guardians to monitor which games young people play on their own PCs or game consoles, and to be aware of how they may gain access to games with higher age limits.

Young Culture Meets (UKM)

UKM

Ung Kultur Møtes (UKM) aims to be Norway's most important meeting place for young culture. UKM Svalbard is the local event in Longyearbyen, and is for young people aged 12 to 20. UKM Svalbard consists of a whole UKM week that takes place in February. From Monday to Friday, preparations are made for an art exhibition and performance on Friday evening. As a participant, you can contribute in many different ways; an art exhibition and cultural performance require a lot of work! You can either be on stage and perform music, dance, theater, or other types of stage performances, you can be a presenter, you can exhibit art or other installations, you can make a film that will be shown, you can contribute behind the scenes as a sound or lighting technician, you can contribute to the PR/Media group, or you can join LUA (Longyearbyen Young Organizers), which is responsible for organizing UKM Svalbard. There is no cost to participate in UKM Svalbard, and you can register on the UKM website External link.

LUA is responsible for planning and organizing the entire UKM Svalbard event. LUA consists of high school students who want to create a social and fun UKM week for young people in the city. As a member of LUA, you will be responsible for various tasks during the UKM event.

A panel of experts is responsible for providing all participants with feedback on their contributions, as well as selecting the contributions that will represent UKM Svalbard at the county festival in Troms. Those under the age of 13 can only be forwarded to the UKM festival in Troms if at least half of the group they are participating in is within the age range.
