The Typhus Statue and the Youth Culture Grant
The deadline for submitting proposals for the Typhus Statue and Youth Culture Scholarship is March 31. Read more below.
The Typhus Statue

The Typhus Statue – Longyearbyen's cultural award – is used to honor individuals who have distinguished themselves through active, significant, and sustained efforts in local community life, either as practitioners or at the administrative level.
Recipients of the Typhus Statue must have had a positive influence on the environment in Longyearbyen. Whether in or outside their position, candidates must have demonstrated a willingness and ability to make "tyfus" a little less "tyfus." Tyfus is an old Svalbard term for anything that is bad. Historically, tyfus originally referred to everything from a poorly paid piecework contract to a sour beer.
Deadline March 31 each year.
The statuette is awarded once a year to individuals living in Svalbard.
The Typhus Statuette is awarded during the May 17th celebrations.

Youth Culture Scholarship
Scholarship recipients are awarded the lithograph "Det er dokke som drar" (It's You Who Are Leaving) by Olaf Storø.

The Youth Culture Scholarship is awarded to talented young performers and/or creators.
Submit your nomination for someone you think deserves the Youth Culture Scholarship.
The Longyearbyen local council awards a culture grant of NOK 15,000 to young people between the ages of 13 and 20. The culture grant is intended to encourage talented young performers and/or creators to continue with their activities.
This is also a good way for the local community to recognize young people who have shown commitment and talent. The Culture Grant is awarded to an individual or a group.
The cultural scholarship should be associated with diversity. Both athletes and cultural performers qualify as recipients. Keywords include originality, creativity, and quality. Everyone is encouraged to submit nominations for worthy candidates who deserve the youth cultural scholarship.
The scholarship will be awarded during the festive performance on May 17.

Statutes
- The scholarship can be awarded to an individual or a group and should be associated with breadth.
- Key words may be originality, creativity, and quality.
- The culture scholarship can be awarded to a group or to individuals.
- Both athletes and cultural practitioners qualify as recipients. The award criteria for the culture scholarship shall be broad, so that many qualify as recipients of the scholarship. Therefore, no standards have been established that could exclude any form of artistic expression.
- There are no conditions attached to the culture scholarship. However, the committee that decides who will receive it may specify whether it is a travel scholarship, an education scholarship, or similar.
- The cultural scholarship is awarded on May 17.
- It is not possible to apply for the cultural grant. Residents of Longyearbyen can submit proposals for worthy recipients to the Culture and Sports Unit within the set deadline. Proposals must be justified in writing.
- The Culture and Sports Unit announces the scholarship annually, well in advance of the award ceremony.
- The Local Community, Upbringing, and Culture Committee decides who will be awarded the scholarship.
- The scholarship is awarded by the chair of the Longyearbyen Local Council or their deputy. Young people, children, adults, teams, and associations are encouraged to submit proposals for worthy candidates who deserve the Youth Culture Scholarship.
