Kullungen Kindergarten

Kullungen Kindergarten is located in the center of town, a short distance from the library, museum, UNIS, and cultural center. The kindergarten has an outdoor area with a hunting cabin and barbecue hut. In the summer of 2012, the entire outdoor area was upgraded with an Arctic climbing tower and a year-round play area under the kindergarten.
In previous years, mining has been Longyearbyen's most important industry and has had the greatest influence on the culture here at 78 degrees north. When the kindergarten was built in 1996, it was natural to name it Kullungen (the coal child). The kindergarten was ready for operation in January 1997 with two departments, Gruve 1 and Gruve 2. Gruve 3 was built in 2002 and Gruve 7 opened in 2022.
The kindergarten is a departmental kindergarten. The approved play and recreation area is 246.2 km2. The kindergarten has children aged 1-6 years.
The groups of children reflect the international population of Longyearbyen.
