Parent Council Working Committee (FAU)

The Parent Council Working Committee (FAU) shall contribute to a safe and good school for everyone. All children have the right to a safe and good school environment. This responsibility rests with both you as a parent and the school. You are each other's most important partners in the work of ensuring that children are happy, learn and develop.

It is also important to work towards a good school environment in general. Children live in a school community and are part of a social community. The Parent Council Working Committee (FAU) is one of the statutory committees that contributes to a good school environment for everyone. Its main task is to systematize cooperation between home and school and give parents real influence over everyday school life.

When you have children at school, you are automatically part of the Parent Council. The Parent Council elects representatives to the Parent Council Working Committee (FAU) – one or more from each class. Together, they form a committee that has the opportunity to influence everyday school life and be a constructive partner for the school. The FAU can offer advice and input, but also raise issues on its own initiative.

What is the FAU's mandate?

The Parent Council's working committee is the parent group's mouthpiece in cooperation with the school and shall contribute to a safe and good learning environment for everyone. The goal of the FAU is to give parents real participation in the school's activities and development. That their views are heard and taken into account, as required by the Education Act. It is not a question of proving one party or the other right in individual cases, but of ensuring that the parents' voice is also represented. The principal shall facilitate good cooperation and dialogue between the school and the FAU. The representatives, for their part, are responsible for following up, maintaining, and further developing the cooperation.

Get involved

Just as the school is responsible for ensuring that cooperation between home and school works, you as a parent are responsible for getting involved. At FUG, we encourage all parents to participate and actively use the FAU, either as a representative or in other ways. In this way, you help shape your children's everyday lives while setting a good example. Children need adults who show that they contribute to the community and build networks.

How is the FAU at Longyearbyen School organized?

The FAU at Longyearbyen School consists of one representative per class in primary school and one representative from secondary school. The representatives for the coming school year are elected, if possible, at the last meeting of the spring semester. Experience has shown that this allows the FAU to start the year's tasks in good time and thus enables it to work effectively from the outset.
