Roads and traffic
LNSS operates the roads in Longyearbyen under an agreement with the Longyearbyen local government. The agreement runs until August 2026.
Snow plowing
All public roads and spaces are cleared according to the snow removal map External link, opens in new window.. Main roads must be open at all times, while other roads must be cleared by 9:00 a.m. on weekdays and 11:00 a.m. on weekends and public holidays. See the snow plowing map for detailed information about snow plowing times by clicking on the various elements, such as roads and parking spaces.
The Longyearbyen local government requests that everyone park their cars, snowmobiles, and equipment so that the snowplow can get through. Damage to equipment located within 3 meters of the roadside in unmarked parking areas will not be compensated.

Road toll
A road toll is required for all motor vehicles with registration plates and for wheel loaders located within the Longyearbyen planning area, cf. the overview above. Tracked vehicles with steel tracks are exempt from road tolls, as they are not permitted to drive on public roads.
Emergency vehicles and diplomatically registered cars are exempt from road tolls. The road toll is invoiced in April. The invoice is sent to the person registered as the owner as of January 1. If the vehicle is sold before the due date for the road toll, the previous owner must agree on payment with the new owner.
Vehicles registered from January 2 will be charged road tolls when they are registered with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.
For vehicles registered before April 1, the full fee is payable. For vehicles arriving between April 1 and September 30, half the fee is payable. Vehicles arriving on October 1 or later are exempt from the fee for that year.
For motor vehicles that are sent to the mainland, scrapped, or deregistered before July 1, half the fee will be refunded upon submission of documentation. The Longyearbyen local government handles road toll refunds.
An overview of our road fees can be found here: Fee and invoice rates 2026 External link, opens in new window.
Road toll refunds
Have you sold your car but still received a road toll invoice?
Longyearbyen Local Council invoices the person registered as the owner of the vehicle in the Norwegian Public Roads Administration's database as of January 1. The previous owner must arrange payment with the new owner.
If you sold your car before this date but still received a road toll invoice, you must check the following:
- Has the sale been reported to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration?
- Has the new owner re-registered the vehicle?
For motor vehicles that are sent to the mainland, scrapped or deregistered before July 1, half of the fee will be refunded upon submission of documentation. The documentation (waybill, deregistration notice or scrapping notification) must be sent to okonomi@lokalstyre.no
If you have any questions about the invoice, please send an email to okonomi@lokalstyre.no

When driving a snowmobile in Longyearbyen, it is important to remember that snowmobiles do not have the same braking characteristics as cars. Everyone driving in Longyearbyen is encouraged to use the main route along the riverbed so that residential areas are as sheltered as possible from snowmobile traffic. Snowmobiles must maintain a speed of 30 km/h in built-up areas. The speed limit for driving in the river valley is 50 km/h.
