Maps and property information

The Longyearbyen local government has digital maps of Longyearbyen and the Longyearbyen planning area.

Various thematic maps, situation maps, and map sections are produced based on elevation, water, and road data, building data, and property boundaries from the Land Registry, as well as planning data and utility data. We also have access to data on cultural heritage sites, avalanche zones, and flood zones, among other things.

Orders should include at least the type of order (map data, site map, or neighborhood list), file format, map section, and type of map data.

When ordering water and sewage data, consent must also be obtained from the water and sewage manager at the Longyearbyen local council.

The cadastral register is compiled based on data from completed surveys, property mergers, and sectioning. The building section of the cadastral register is compiled based on data from building permits and updated after new surveys. Addresses are entered in the cadastral register by the Longyearbyen local government as the address authority.

Most street names in Longyearbyen are based on the numbering system used in the mining tunnels/mines. These addresses have the name "Vei" followed by a number that represents a specific road section, for example Vei 500, which is one of the main roads, and Vei 505, which is a side road to Vei 500. Side roads are assigned road numbers in ascending order along the main road. This system can cause some confusion when new roads are added between existing side roads, for example in Road 232.

The cabin areas are assigned "normal" address names, such as Breinosfoten and Revneset.

Address numbers are mainly assigned to all buildings worthy of an address, where the main entrance(s) or shared access (stairs, walkway, etc.) are assigned the address number. The normal principle is that address numbers are assigned in ascending order with even numbers on the left side of the road and odd numbers on the right side. In Longyearbyen, however, you will find several places where the opposite has been done, but as a general rule, all address changes or new assignments are carried out according to the normal principle.

Some address objects also use the usage number as identification. This applies to buildings that are addressed with a shared address number, for example where there are several buildings with shared access. This is typical in larger apartment complexes or where there is staircase access with a hallway. The usage number is structured as "H0101", where H01 is the floor number and the following 01 is the serial number. Sequence numbers shall be assigned in ascending order, starting from the first apartment on the left when standing in the shared access area, and continuing clockwise. The third apartment from the left on the 4th floor will therefore be assigned the usage number H0403.

The official address of an apartment is made up of the street name + house number + any apartment number. For example, 225 8 or 505 3 H0101.

The official way of writing addresses is with a space between the address name and the address number, where the address name is "Vei 227" and the address number is "1", it should be written as follows: Vei 227 1. The official system does not use 0 in front of numbers under 10. If there is a letter in the address, the letter should be written with a space after the address number, like this: 1 A.
